Where to Start
Because the O&P athlete community is small, a lot of information is word-of-mouth.  Thankfully, we've done the research for you.  Use the following Web sites for reference when your patients want to get involved in indoor or outdoor sports.

The list of contact Web sites  listed here is by no means inclusive.  Contacting some of the national organizations listed here will give you additional information regarding specific sports in your area.

National Resources

    This site provides a list of links to specific sports ranging from archery to windsurfing, all targeting the amputee athlete.
  • Adaptive Adventures

    As a chapter of Disabled Sports/USA, the Adaptive Adventures Web site offers articles, links, resources and details in several winter and summer sports.
  • Adventure Without Limits

    Information about outdoor sports such as rafting, canoeing, skiing and rock climbing can be found on this site, as well as links to other outdoor sports-related sites.
  • Amputee Coalition of America

    ACA is a group dedicated to supporting and providing services for amputees, and its Web site has a wealth of information.
  • Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF)

    Information on CAF-sponsored competitive events is listed, as well as athlete's stories and a calendar of events.
  • Disabled Sports/USA
    www.dsusa.org
    DS/USA is a nonprofit association that offers sports rehabilitation programs to anyone with a permanent physical disability.
  • National Ability Center (NAC)

    This site offers information on a broad range of the organization's year-round sports programs, which are led by professional, certified instructors.
  • National Center on Physical Activity and Disability
    www.ncpad.org
    This site provides information and resources that can enable people with disabilities to become more physically active.
  • National Disability Sports Alliance (NDSA)
    www.ndsaonline.org
    Members ($25/year, free if under 18) receive newsletters, calendars of events and the opportunity to participate in regional, national, and international competitive events.  Contact information for each sport is also included.
  • National Sports Center for the Disabled

    This site gives details on programs, events, resources and information on 20 sports for people with physical disabilities.
  • Orthotic &Prosthetics Assistance Fund (OPAF)
    www.opfund.org
    OPAF works on physical fitness, mentoring, leadership programs and other issues for the O&P field.
Indoor Sports
  • Basketball

    The official site of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association gives information on rules, game schedules, and national, collegiate and youth teams.
  • Bowling
    www.awba.org
    Run by the American Wheelchair Bowling Association, this site provides information on where to play and how to get adapted equipment.
  • Ice Hockey

    The American Amputee Hockey Association regulates this site, which provides schedules and contact information.
  • Hunting

    The Disabled Hunters of North America Web site contains links to similar organizations, hunting news, products for sale and volunteer information for certain states.
  • Martial Arts

    This site covers all types of martial arts.  It includes detailed instructions on martial arts moves for those in wheelchairs.
  • Sled Hockey

    This site provides rules, schedules and contact information, including by region, for sled hockey.

    The International Paralympic Committee's Web site for swimming gives information on competition, rules, upcoming events and links to national and international amputee swimming Web sites.
  • Table Tennis

    The USA Table Tennis Disabled Athletes Committee's Web site offers a calendar of events, as well as information on playing table tennis at the Paralympic level.

    The World Organization Volleyball for Disabled Web site has a competition calendar, information for children interested in playing and a history of volleyball, including when it was adapted into standing and sitting volleyball.
Outdoor Sports

    This site, run by The War Amps organization, features pictures and descriptions of assistive or adapted devices amputees use to play baseball.
  • Bicycling

    Viewers can find pictures and firsthand accounts from amputee bicyclists on this Web site.  It also includes tips on basic bicycle riding for lower-limb amputees.
  • Fishing

    Infinitec Inc.'s Web site provides information in a wide range of sports, specifically fishing.  The site gives resource links, stories and educational tips.
  • Golf

    The National Amputee Golf Association's comprehensive Web site gives details on NAGA events, tournaments, membership benefits, scholarships and other amputee- and golf-related links.
  • Handcycling

    The United States Handcycling Fedration's Web site offers extensive information on handcycling news, competitions, events and clinics, as well as photos, classifieds, and links to other Web sites.
  • Horseback Riding
    www.narha.org
    While this site for the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association is mostly for instructors and association members, program listings by state are also available, including places specifically geared to amputees.
  • Sailing

    Controlled by the International Foundation for Disabled Sailing, this site covers sailing news, events, sponsors, and regulations.
  • Scuba Diving
    www.waramps.ca/nac/scuba1.html
    Part of a Canadian site that is a general resource for amputees, this Web page offers information on scuba diving for amputees, with tips for choosing an instructor and firsthand stories from the amputee scuba divers.  Water-friendly prostheses are also discussed.
  • Skateboarding

    The Amped Riders Association's Web site provides information on the Amped Riders skateboarding team, clinics for amputees interested in skateboarding, reviews of prosthetic devices and links to other related sites.
  • Skiing

    Viewers will find success stories, resources, calendars and details on upcoming events on the SkiForAll Foundation's Web site.
  • Soccer

    The American Amputee Soccer Association runs this site, which features information about the association, the players, tournaments, news, and sponsors.
