In 2009, AOPA, in conjunction with the Amputee Coalition of America and the PlowShare Group, produced a variety of ads focused on getting the attention of lawmakers and policymakers in the Washington DC Area. Here are the products of the campaign.

As a result of paid and PSA placement, the Obama ad appeared in several major publications including Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, Sports Illustrated and The Week. The advertising placements targeted and vital legislative, business, and media markets including Washington D.C., Seattle, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis, Dallas, and Houston.

Following the magazine ads, AOPA and ACA launched another outreach campaign targeting policymakers in the DC area. This outreach included educational posters on bus shelters near House and Senate office buildings and in the terminals of the three major Washington DC airports.

In response to the opportunity presented by the 60 Minutes story on Medicare Fraud in South Florida, AOPA and ACA placed full-page ad in the November 5 issue of Roll Call – a daily newspaper read by legislators and policy makers.
Thomas Fise, JD Interviewed after 60 Minutes Story
AOPA Executive Director Tom Fise was interviewed by CBS4 in Miami, Florida as part of AOPA’s follow-up to the October 25 60 Minutes feature which highlighted Medicare fraud in South Florida. CBS4 conducted the investigation in conjunction with 60 Minutes and has continued its look into the fraud issue in Florida. Tom Fise joined CBS4 to speak about the need for Congress to enact H.R. 2479 in order combat Medicare fraud and abuse.
AOPA and ACA Radio Spot
AOPA and ACA created a public service announcement during drive-times on Washington, D.C.’s popular news radio station, WTOP. Produced by the PlowShare group, the spot emphasizes the mobility and enhanced standard of living that O&P professionals provide to patients and featuring Rachel Grusse, a 17 year-old amputee with a compelling story.
Letter of Thanks to Senator Snowe
On December 21, AOPA and ACA placed a letter from amputees living in the state of Maine thanking Senator Olympia Snowe for her support and encouraging her to keep up the good work in the remainder of the Congressional session.
