On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, AOPA submitted comments on the list of CMS proposed HCPCS codes that describe off-the-shelf orthoses that may be subject to future rounds of competitive bidding. In addition to its own comments, AOPA has gone on record supporting the separate comments that have been prepared and submitted by the O&P Alliance. The proposed list, originally published by CMS on February 9, 2012, contained 62 L codes that CMS believes could be considered as off-the-shelf (OTS) orthoses. AOPA’s Coding and Reimbursement Committee performed a comprehensive review of the proposed list and provided medical rationale and supporting clinical literature for the 48 HCPCS codes that AOPA believes should not be classified as OTS.
