Major Announcement from CMS and DME MACs: Proposed LCD Changes for the Lower Limb Prostheses Policy

Today, January 18, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MACs) released information for proposed changes to the Local Coverage Determination (LCD) for lower limb prostheses.  The proposed changes represent a major leap forward in the care of K2 patients.

Under the proposed changes CMS will now allow limited coverage of microprocessor controlled knees for select patients who are classified as K2, instead of limiting microprocessor knees to patients classified as K3 and above.

You may access and view the proposed LCD changes here.

CMS and the DME MACs are currently soliciting public feedback and comments on the proposed LCD changes. The public comment period will end on March 2, 2024, and there will also be a public meeting held on February 22, 2024.

AOPA is currently reviewing the LCD changes and will provide appropriate feedback and comments, we will also keep members appraised of the public meeting as more details are released.
