As a reminder, key Medicare telehealth flexibilities have expired because of the current continuing resolution impasse and government shutdown. This means that Medicare telehealth coverage has reverted primarily to pre-COVID restrictions, being limited to select providers in designated areas and for select services only.
As of today, October 1, 2025, physician documentation obtained via telehealth will not be considered acceptable for determining O&P medical necessity, even for those services which specifically require a face-to-face encounter. However, any telehealth documentation obtained prior to October 1, 2025, may still be used.
AOPA is monitoring the budget process and potential continued telehealth exemptions. There appears to be bipartisan support for the exemptions. We will keep AOPA membership appraised of any changes and/or updates.
